For this particular run, we did something rarely ever seen: tortoise shell block inlay and binding. On this particular Jazzmaster , we chose a classic: Target 3-Tone Sunburst (more on that later). We've done a lot of Custom Shop builds over the years, but this stands out as one of the more unique - this is the first Jazzmaster to exist like it.

The reason we can say that is the customization of the block inlays on the maple neck: they're tortoiseshell. It really catches your eye and matches the neck binding perfectly. The idea came to us when designing a Custom Shop bass, and we took that straight over to this guitar, thinking it would be a great feature on a '66 Jazzmaster. The result is actually better than what we imagined. Tortoiseshell blocks have never been done on a Teambuilt Jazzmaster, until now. They match the tortoiseshell pickguard nicely. This, plus the cream pickup covers, knobs and switch tips, creates an all around beautiful aesthetic.

The two-piece alder body sports the iconic offset curves, with a Closet Classic lacquer finish, giving it the look and feel of a guitar that was built back in the 60's, stayed hidden for decades, and just reappeared. Our friends at the Custom Shop picked out light pieces, and the result is a Jazzmaster at just 7.7 lbs.

Another aspect of this guitar that will catch your eye is the color: it's called "Target 3-Tone Sunburst", is one of the best looking sunburst finishes we've seen. The genesis of this particular style of sunburst stems from a Custom Shop Bass VI we were doing for a very particular customer that wanted the mid-60's style of sunburst, with vibrant yellow, orange and red, and defined separation all the way into the brown and black edges. It came out so well that we asked if we could do it on other instruments - and the Custom Shop then made it an official option. That's how this color was born.

The tinted maple neck sports a 62 Jazzmaster "C" shaped profile, which is the most popular for this model. It's not too fat to play, and not too skinny - it's the perfect amount of wood to grip. Throughout the years, most players have gravitated towards a 9.5" radius and 6105 (narrow tall) frets - so those are two tweaks that we made on this guitar. The result is a vintage vibe with modern playability.

Tied together with ultra-flexible, vintage-style Jazzmaster wiring—including the famous “lead/rhythm” circuit, complete with thumbwheel controls—the vintage styled Jazzmaster single-coil pickups sound mellow and fat; the model’s calling card.

Another main feature is that it's equipped with the RSD J-Bridge. Fender's proprietary take on a new & improved bridge for offset guitars like a Jazzmaster, it's there for better stability, with brass saddles for extra warmth. This bridge is only available on Custom Shop guitars. In addition, this one has vintage-style tuning machines, a bone nut and a round string tree. the creation of Custom Shop guitars - we've started a run of "Staff Picks". This is one of the first, from our long time customer, employee and friend Max Kane. You may know him from his band All Systems Know, or seen him around L.A. on various stages. You may also recognize his work on our social media posts, as many of those sweet shots of guitars around Santa Monica come from him. We asked Max what his dream guitar would be, and the outcome was this '59 Jazzmaster in Sherwood Green with a matching headstock. It doesn't stop there - keep reading and you'll see why this one is commonly see it on Stratocasters or the occasional Jazz bass, but I really want it on a Jazzmaster. I really like matching headstocks, as inspired by both mid-60's guitars and the Japanese-made Contemporary Series from the 80's. I also wanted to make this one truly unique, so we went for the silver anodized pickguard and aluminum pickup covers to match. The cherry on top was the metal switch tip."

Max chose to do this one as a Closet Classic with a lacquer finish, so you get the vintage vibe, but without any wear. It looks great on the alder body, which is lightweight and resonant. That, combined with the super comfortable '59 C neck shape, results in a Jazzmaster that you'll want to play all night. There is a modernized tweak, as this guitar has a 9.5" radius and Narrow Tall (6105) frets. This makes it great for playing even when high on the neck and bending notes. Max requested for the finish to be worn off on the back of the neck, to give it a nice broken-in feel.

Another main feature is that it's equipped with the RSD J-Bridge. This is Fender's proprietary take on a new & improved bridge for offset guitars, it's there for better stability, with brass saddles for extra warmth. This bridge is only available on Custom Shop guitars. Due to the extremely positive reaction, we've started requesting it on nearly every Jazzmaster we do. Max knew right away he wanted this bridge on the guitar.

We stayed period correct for the rest of the hardware, going with vintage tuners, string retainer, etc. The everything you'd expect in a vintage Jazzmaster, modern playability, an improved upon bridge, vintage style pickups, and with a super cool look. Big thanks to Max for dreaming this one up, and with something you haven't seen before, especially when in partnership with Fender. For this take on a classic late 50's era Tele, we went a step further - going to the Custom Shop in Corona, CA to hand select the wood for an exclusive run of guitars. We were escorted into the wood vault, to go through their finest collection of wood spreads. From that, we designed a batch of 15 guitars that are all one of a kind. Within that, there is only one Figured Rose Myrtle Jazzmaster, and this is it.

We are excited to present (over an alder body) is something to behold. This finely textured hardwood and is rarely seen on guitars, so when we were presented the option, we knew we had to jump on it. We chose the most interesting piece on hand, and went with a natural finish to really let the wood grain to show. Given its beauty, we chose to keep this one as an NOS piece - no aging or relic work - and it came out great.

A great feature of this guitar is the neck. It has an easy playing '59 Esquire "C" profile, with a modern radius (9.5") and narrow tall frets. We chose this neck shape due to its comfortable grip - while it has a vintage feel, it's not too thick. Some call it the perfect "in between" neck. The 59 Esquire C shape is becoming more popular, as it's a similar carve to the 60's Oval C seen on so many Custom Shop guitars, but with a little more "beef" to it. If you're a fan of vintage neck shapes but still like it slim, this is a great way to go.

Designed expressly for jazzers (but adopted by surfers) and introduced in 1958, the Jazzmaster combined refined looks with a warm, mellifluous voice and new tremolo system. It evolved over the years, but the 1959 Jazzmaster is known as the most influential model that helped define new musical genres - that's what we went for with this Custom Shop recreation, but with a few twists for modern players. Tone-wise, you get the classic sound, thanks to the Custom Shop Vintage Jazzmaster pickups. Tied together with ultra-flexible, vintage-style Jazzmaster wiring—including the famous “lead/rhythm” circuit, complete with thumbwheel controls—the vintage styled Jazzmaster single-coil pickups sound mellow and fat; the model’s calling card. But don't be mistaken, this guitar can definitely rock, as plenty of players have shown with Jazzmasters.

A modern tweak we made was the addition of the RSD bridge. Designed in house by the Fender Custom Shop's metal magician, Scott Buehl, this proprietary bridge improves stability, bringing consistency to tuning and intonation, correcting some of the quirks of the original Jazzmaster bridge. We love it so much that we put it on almost every Custom Shop Jazzmaster we do.

It's topped off with vintage tuning machines, bone nut and a Silver Anodized pickguard. Also includes a Custom Shop brown hardshell case, strap and certificate of authenticity.

We haven't seen a Jazzmaster like this before - it's truly stunning. We picked the coolest looking piece Fender had at the time, which was earmarked specifically for this guitar. Come to Truetone Music to experience it today, or make it yours right here. Remember, only one was made, and once it's gone, it's gone for good.

Serial # CZ587770

Model# 9231015920

Weight: 8.6 lbs.

Finish Package: NOS

Finish: Nitro Lacquer

Color: Natural

Body: Alder with Figured Rose Myrtle Top

Pickguard: Silver Anodized

Pickups: Fender Custom Shop Vintage Jazzmaster Set

Neck: Maple

Neck Shape: '59 Esquire "C"

Neck Nut Width: 1.650"

Neck Butt Width: 2.200"

Neck Thickness at 1st Fret: .790"

Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .970"

Tint: Medium

Fretboard: AAA Rosewood (Flat Lam)

Dots: Vintage Clay

Frets: 21

Fretwire: 6105

Radius: 9.5"

Bone Nut

Tuners: Vintage

String Guide: Vintage

Bridge: RSD Jazzmaster

Neck Plate: V Logo

Knobs: Knurled Chrome

Wiring: Vintage

Case: Custom Shop Deluxe Brown
