Fender Custom Shop

A 60's Classic with a Custom Twist

The early 1960s saw some important changes to the Telecaster, including different pickups, a new neck profile and a “round-laminated” rosewood fingerboard, more color options, and more, all culminating in a compelling new contemporary look and sound.  As music evolved during this era, so did Leo Fender's first main creation.  The Tele has continued to change over the years, but for many, stepping back to how it was done in the '60's is the way to go.

The Custom Shop 1963 Telecaster Relic is a fine testament to these innovations, featuring a two-piece select alder body with deep contours for perfect comfort, a quartersawn maple neck with a time-honored 1963 “C” profile, and a 9.5”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 21 narrow tall frets for steady play up and down the neck.  It has a very comfortable, worn-in feel, and while it's slim, it's not too skinny, and fattens up as you progress up the neck.  This neck shape has proven to be one of the most popular for Custom Shop guitars.

We chose to do this one in Olympic White with a matching headstock, with a tortoise shell pickguard, creating an iconic, striking aesthetic.  We get a lot of Telecasters in here, and right now this is pretty much the coolest looking one!

The Custom Shop nailed the aging and wear on this guitar - it's tastefully done, and the checking on the body is some of the best we've seen.  We upgraded the rosewood fretboard to "Sort for Dark", and they definitely found a super dark piece of rosewood for this guitar.  Make note of the pickguard in the photos as well - it's very vintage looking, unlike most tortoise shell today.  Also, if you're looking for a lightweight Tele, you've found it - this one weighs only 73.3 lbs.

Hand-wound '63 Tele pickups (normally a significant upgrade) produce a rich ’60s tone, which still has the twang that Tele players love, with a bit more roundness and midrange that suites many styles.  These are meant to be true replications of the original pickups used in 1963, with Alnico 2 magnets, enamel wire and vintage stagger.  It's all the bite with warmth to spare.  We went with the modern Tele wiring and added the Greasebucket tone control which adds a new dimension to your tone.  The effect is that when rolled down, the tone pot reduces the high frequencies, but does not add bass.  This makes it a more versatile guitar.

Other features include a vintage Tele bridge with steel saddles, period correct tuning machines, bone nut and a beautiful tortoise shell pickguard.  Also includes a Blonde hardshell case, strap and certificate of authenticity.
