From modern versions of legendary Gretsch instruments to artist tribute models and specially requested one-off guitars, the Gretsch Custom Shop takes “That Great Gretsch Sound” to an entirely new plane, but also preserves and perfects it. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eTruetone Music is proud to have a long and close relationship with Gretsch, especially with the Custom Shop.  Over the years, we've made a pilgrimages to Corona there to sit down with Masterbuilders to cook up a batch of Custom Shop guitars.  Sometimes we go for vintage-styled recreations, sometimes we go for modernized tweaks.  Sometimes it's a classic color, sometimes it's a totally new color or even reclaimed wood.  Either way, they always knock it out of the park!  Years ago, we met with the legendary Stephen Stern there to create a batch of unique builds - this was one of them.  Even after he retired, the legacy continues with amazing guitars such as this.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThis G6120CS 1962 Doublecut is a a result of this partnership.  It's a reimagining of a classic model, with hand-selected wood picked out for this guitar.  The end result is stunning.  We had never come a cross a Gretsch exactly like this, which is exactly why we did it - and when it sold, we had to do it again, which is what we have here.  This one was built by veteran Masterbuilder Gonzalo Madrigal, and of course he nailed it.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe main calling card of this guitar is the Curly Maple top, back and sides (with matching headcap),  and a AAA Flame Maple neck.  These woods give the guitar a truly unique look.  It's been stained Dark Transparent Amber and given the Closet Classic treatment - so it's aged, with finish checking, but no wear\/ding\/dents.  This is a clean guitar, looking like it was store in it's case for decades and then pulled out - for you.  Be sure to zoom in on the photos to see the amazingly well-done checking in the finish.  \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe G6120CS 1962 Doublecut comes equipped with TV Jones Ray Butts Ful-Fidelity Filter'Tron pickups (Stern's suggestion) to give it the classic Gretsch sound - they are meant to be the most \"vintage correct\" pickups out there for a Gretsch.   These were designed according to Butts' original notes and Jones' extensive expertise and analysis of the original Filter'Tron pickups.  They have the vintage pole spacing, covers and zinc-coated backplate used back in the day.  Per Jones, the original pickups were not wax saturated, so these are not, to keep them historically correct.  The result is a more three-dimensional, open-air quality to the tone.  They have a tight bass response and slightly more top end EQ (compared to TV Jones Classics).  They have a very nice sparkle and dynamic range provided by the lower output and absence of wax.  These are the way to go to get the unmistakable Great Gretsch Sound.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThrow in the B6 Bigsby with a compentsated Rocking Bar bridge, and you have a classic Gretsch guitar. The \"C\" neck is familiar and comfortable - not fat, not too skinny, just right.  The ebony fretboard has vintage frets for the right feel and is topped with beautiful mother of pearl inlays.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eBesides the hand-selected wood, we threw in a few other custom touches. Aged binding, with a tortoise shell pickguard that has cream engraving to match, along with custom tortoise shell pickup bezels, ties it all together. The fretboard has a split radius, different from an end-to-end compound radius.  It’s asymmetrical from the bass side to the treble side. So, he engineered a “camshaft” tailpiece (“CamTail”) with string ramps compensated for tension and gauge.  That way, when you dive on it, the strings move in pitch unison relative to each other.  This is influenced by his playing of lap and pedal steel, and it’s similar to moving chords and maintaining relative pitch.  It's machined in house.  The CamTail also contains a locking mechanism that stops the vibrato back at its normal pitch and allows the player to bend notes without pitch droop. This is called a zero-point return. The fretboard has a split radius, different from an end-to-end compound radius.  It’s asymmetrical from the bass side to the treble side. Although it can sound just like a single-coil, it is built with two coils (humbucking). The dual-coils provide a hint of compression on the high-end and no 60-cycle hum.  One part of the recipe that makes the Magna'Tron so special is its staggered cylinder Fender-style magnets.  The result is an output that is b\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eright and chirpy with quick attack and exceptional pop and clarity. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Are You Experienced, and Forever Changes.  The world was changing, and with it, music too.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eIt also marks a big transformation in the guitar industry.  The boom of the mid-60's was fading and companies were trying to find new footing.  For Gibson, that meant a focus on traditional models with post 1965 specs, including thinner nut widths.  The ES-335 was introduced in 1958 and has remained in production since.  It still stands as one of Gibson's most iconic models.  In 1967, traditional tonewoods like Brazilian rosewood and Honduran mahogany were still standard before tighter regulations took effect.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eAs we approach the 60th anniversary of the legendary year of 1967, we are excited to present this vintage ES-335 in Cherry.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHere we have an all-original specimen from that year, as well as a factory installed Bigsby.  The Cherry finish is original as well, and looks great - over the years, it's aged nicely, resulting in a beautiful patina.  There have been no mods or repairs.  Our vintage expert and head luthier inspected the guitar to give it a full vetting.  He found that the neck heel has what appears to be a factory overspray; This is a fully enclosed, trussed hollow body with two internal sound posts fitted into a braced, solid-wood top. This allows the top and back to move in tandem to maximize resonance, suppress feedback and create a lyrical sustain.   Also, this guitar is LIGHT - it weighs in at just 6.2 lbs.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cu\u003eThe Feel\u003c\/u\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePowers wanted the guitar to be lightweight and perfectly balanced whether standing or sitting. The body is hollow so you can hold it with ease; the contoured armrest and radiused body edges add to the playing comfort.  The neck is a “just right” blend of not too big and not too slim, flowing smoothly into the unique fretboard geometry. The fretboard has a split radius, different from an end-to-end compound radius.  It’s asymmetrical from the bass side to the treble side. The treble side is slightly flatter all the way from the first fret to the end of the board.  This allows for maximum playability and easier, choke-free string bending.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cb\u003e\u003cu\u003eThe Sound\u003c\/u\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e  \u003cbr\u003eThe pickups are a new design that blend modern magnetic structure with an old inspiration. It allows the strings to vibrate more naturally and produce both fidelity and colorful warmth – which often tend to be at odds with one another but beautifully complement each other within this design. Powers designed two variations of this pickup – one emphasizing clarity and warmth, the other with a firm, brighter response.  This particular guitar is loaded with the former, called FF42 pickups.  It’s a “full Faraday” cage made with 42-gauge wire. Visually, it’s engine turned on top, reminiscent of hot rod detailing.  \u003cspan\u003eImagine single coil pickups with more muscle and P90's with more definition - and quite significantly, they are quiet, without much hum at all.  These are an all new pickup design, and it's obvious that Andy Powers has hit a home run.\u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cu\u003eThe Trem \/ Vibrato\u003c\/u\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003ePowers stated that he loves the tactile expression of a pitch-shifting tail, but they notoriously go out of tune as the pitch changes. So, he engineered a “camshaft” tailpiece (“CamTail”) with string ramps compensated for tension and gauge.  That way, when you dive on it, the strings move in pitch unison relative to each other.  This is influenced by his playing of lap and pedal steel, and it’s similar to moving chords and maintaining relative pitch.  It's machined in house.  The CamTail also contains a locking mechanism that stops the vibrato back at its normal pitch and allows the player to bend notes without pitch droop. This is called a zero-point return. The mahogany neck has a comfortable Rounded “C” profile and features a rosewood fretboard with acrylic small block inlays and 22 medium jumbo frets. The 12” fretboard radius is equally comfortable whether you’re playing clean and jangly chords at the first fret or searing lead lines with heavy string bends up high.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ES-330 is powered by a pair of Dogear P-90 pickups that are hand-wired to 500k potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors for bright and clear clean tones and wonderfully nasty, snarling tones when overdriven. Feedback? Sure–any fully hollow guitar can be prone to feedback and probably isn’t the first choice for ultra-high gain and volume situations, but the ES-330 can be surprisingly easy to control when you apply some gain, and with some judicious palm and fretting hand muting, it will sing and sustain in a unique and musical way that most other guitars can’t match.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe trapeze tailpiece adds to the visual and sonic appeal of the ES-330, while the fully adjustable ABR-1 bridge ensures spot-on intonation. It was built in 2018 as a one-off.  Doug Irwin built the original Wolf for Garcia in the early 1970s, and he made the body asymmetrical on purpose so the guitar would hang in balance on a strap. That shape is what this guitar borrows, and as a semi-hollow, it comes in at just 6.1 lbs. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe guitar has a mahogany body with a stunning flame maple top - that's the first thing you'll notice.  It's finished in Vintage Natural to show the wood grain nicely.  We noticed how resonant the guitar is, even before plugging in.  Of course, once you do, that's were it really shines.  This build utilizes DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF pickups to provide vintage-inspired tones.  They are classic humbuckers, with plenty of warmth.  It's also a very versatile guitar, as you have the flexibility of coil-spolitting for single coil sounds.  Of course the goal here is for Jerry Garcia like tones but you can actually do a lot more with it - this one for you to find your own voice on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also has a mahogany set neck that is super comfortable to play.  it's a 25\" scale and has a nice C profile.  The ebony fretboard is smooth and adds a nice snap to an otherwise very warmly voiced guitar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe guitar has been set up to play perfectly by the techs in our shop.  We found that the strap button was moved for better balance (it's a very light guitar, so this makes sense), and the old hole was file.  It's not mint but it's in great condition, with normal player wear.   It comes with a hardshell case and is ready to go!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhether you're a Garcia fan, or just wanting a great boutique build from one of the best out there, this Artinger Custom is quite the find.  We don't see it lasting long.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Artinger","offers":[{"title":"Default","offer_id":68021639905523,"sku":"50ART001","price":3299.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0789\/2433\/files\/1-Img53032.jpg?v=1793300148"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.truetonemusic.com\/collections\/hollow-body-electrics.oembed?page=2","provider":"Truetone Music","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
