Martin Custom 000-18 Wandoo
Truetone Music was invited to Nazareth, PA for a very special visit, with the chance to spec out guitars to be custom built by the Martin Custom Shop. We were also thrilled by the prospect of being able to hand select our own wood at the factory, aided by Custom Shop representatives and tonewood experts. That began a relationship that has continued for multiple custom runs over a number of years.
We knew we wanted to represent an interesting variety as far as models and exotic woods, but we also wanted the guitars to sound as best they could, never sacrificing tone for bling.
This Martin Custom Shop version of a 000-18 with Wandoo, Sitka Spruce and Black Mapleis a true example of that theory coming together in the best possible way. It's safe to say that it's likely that you've never seen a 000 like this one. The look of the guitar itself would be enough, but the materials, construction and appointments make it all the more special.
The choice of Wandoo for the back & sides is what makes this guitar one of the more unique Martin's we've had here. If you're wondering what Wandoo is, so were we! Here's the scoop, straight from Martin:
It is sourced from Western Australia and has a very nice figuring to it. Tonally it's placed right between a Mahogany and Koa. Very nice balanced tone, but not as rich sounding as Rosewood species.
The warmth provided by this wood is a great complement to the precise attack of a 000 guitar - making this one perfect for strumming as well as fingerpicking. It's a "best of both worlds" scenario. And, this particular spread of Wandoo was hand-selected at the Custom Shop. Not only does it look spectacular, but the experts there chose it for how it would sound - deep, warm and round, but with a crisp articulation and strong sustain. The Sitka Spruce top resonates and sings sweetly, providing excellent note definition.
The neck is Martin’s popular modified low oval profile, making it very comfortable to play for hours. The radius is 16” with a nut width of 1 11/16”. The guitar is finished in gloss with a satin finished neck. Be sure to check out the photos to view the beautiful rosette and purfling, which add to the special nature of this guitar. Also, the headstock is a standout feature - it caught our attention right away.
