Martin D-18 Sinker Mahogany
Over the years, Truetone Music has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with the C. F. Martin & Co. Founded in 1833, the company has managed to continually produce guitars of legendary quality and exceptional sound that remain unmatched in the industry. Thus, it was a great honor when Truetone Music was invited by Martin to Nazareth, Pennsylvania to take the factory tour, visit the Custom Shop and select special wood for custom built guitars to be made to our specifications.
One of the first ideas we had was to create a D-18 dreadnaught made of all Mahogany. Top, back and sides. The traditional D-18 comes stock with a Sitka Spruce top, with mahogany back and sides. When we presented this idea to the Martin custom builders and wood specialists, they suggested we have a look at some Sinker Mahogany, and we quickly realized we were going to have something special.
Sinker Mahogany is the product of trees that have been submerged in river waters. The old growth trees were cut down many years ago and logs settled into central and South American tributaries. It was later discovered that these sunken treasures made for unbelievable tone woods and were harvested for that purpose, sometimes using sonar to locate it.
The resulting D-18 is a one of a kind creation that has completely surpassed our expectations in playing performance, feel, tone and beauty. This guitar is an absolute cannon, and it boasts the unique properties associated with Sinker Mahogany. It is balanced in volume across the entire fingerboard and the dynamic range is exquisite, tight lows, strong mids and a shimmering top form an overall clarity that is a joy to hear.
The Sinker Mahogany D-18 was designed to honor the traditional styling and feel of the original. The neck is a very comfortable modified low oval profile with the high performance taper. The fingerboard is black ebony, with a 1 3/4” nut width and 16” neck radius. The guitar is finished with traditional appointments, a gloss finish, satin neck and a hard shell case.
