Incorporating Dr. Z’s acclaimed EF86 preamp, the Z-28 MK II comes with more power and provides a high-fidelity tube amp combo with plenty of headroom, delivering a rich, warm tube tones filled with harmonic complexity and dynamic sensitivity. 

This versatile amp can produce everything from pristine cleans to robust overdrive and serves as an excellent foundation for pedals. Powered by dual 5881 tubes rather than the MK I’s 6V6s, its 30-watt section offers classic mid-’60s American tones or British Invasion-style grit depending on your playing intensity. The addition of a post-phase-inverter master volume ensures full tonal character at any volume level. Effects like overdrive, distortion, modulation, reverb, or delay blend seamlessly as if integrated into the amp itself. Increasing the gain beyond noon reveals overdrive rich in even-order harmonics, a signature of the EF86 circuit. 

The Z-28 MK II features a redesigned chassis and cabinet influenced by Dr. Z's Z-Master, offering a resonant yet lightweight build. This updated cabinet replaces the Z-Master’s three-hole baffle with a streamlined 1x12-inch layout, housing a Celestion Creamback speaker known for its classic British tone. The Creamback delivers warmth, a pronounced midrange growl, and a balanced low-end and high-end response that brings your amp’s voice to life. This British-inspired speaker contributes to the Z-28 MK II’s rich, harmonically complex sound that stands out in any setting.
