Truetone Fretless Run

At Truetone Music, we love Fender Custom Shop Basses.  We know that bass players recognize that this is where some of the world's greatest basses are made.  We also know that they can do more (much more) than recreate the iconic models from the '50's and '60's.  There's an opportunity to create something new, something different.   There's where we went with this bass: it's modeled after a 1964 Jazz, but fretless.  We did this specifically because no one else is - the only Custom Shop fretless basses you see out there is the Jaco Pastorius model.  While we love that bass, we wanted to do something different, not a signature model, to create something truly unique.  This is the third in a run of fretless basses we cooked up with the Custom Shop, and the only one like it to exist.

For this '64 Jazz Bass, we went with the Time Capsule finish, where it's a thin Flash Coat Nitrocellulose Lacquer and the hardware is faded slightly (Closet Classic).  The Custom Shop has nailed this process, to create the look of a vintage bass that was never played - it's like it came out of the factory yesterday, if yesterday was 60 years ago.  Hence the "Time Capsule" moniker.  This looks absolutely sublime in Natural Blonde. The transparent finish is perfect to see the nice grain of the ash body.

The quartersawn maple neck has the classic 60's Jazz bass "U" profile, topped with a quartersawn maple fretboard.  Here's where it gets really unique: this is a fretless, with fret lines for guidance, but they're light on a maple fretboard.   In some lighting, they're barely there.  Some would call them "ghost lines" (we just made that up).  It's a super cool look and one that we've never seen before.  The back of the neck is smooth and easy to slide up & down without concerning yourself with getting "stuck".  The bass is very comfortable to play.

Of course, it sounds amazing too.  Custom Shop Vintage Jazz single-coil pickups provide a variety of tones, and most importantly, suit a fretless bass perfectly.  These classic pickups produce warm, clear and articulate output, with great low-end definition, up-front midrange punch, and singing high-end.  We figured these would be perfect for this bass, and once it landed and we plugged in, we knew it.

Other unique features include creme pickup covers - it's a nice touch we added.  The bass comes with the metal covers installed but those can be removed of course - see the additional photos.

The bass includes a vintage style Deluxe hardshell case, Custom Shop strap, and Certificate of Authenticity.  It came to us from Fender with roundwound strings but we can throw flatwounds on it if you'd like.

What we have here is an amazing looking, sounding and feeling Custom Shop '64 Jazz Fretless.  This is the only one ever made like it.  Come to Truetone Music to check this bass out, or order it right here right now to get it sent straight to your home.
