EVH Custom Shop Wolfgang HH Cobalt Blue Metallic With Case
Since its launch in 2007, EVH has had one mission—to take the tools Eddie Van Halen used to create his groundbreaking guitar work and place them in your hands. Over 35 years of innovation and experience were injected into the creation of the original Wolfgang USA, which continues to unleash pure unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll power, titanic sound, speedy playability and stunning spotlight-ready style.
Now, for the first time, the EVH Custom Shop has been unleashed. This is the very beginning of another chapter in the brand's evolution, and we are proud to be at the forefront of it.
The original guitar that launched the line, the Wolfgang, is the platform for customization. Here we have one of the first EVH Custom Shop Wolfgang guitars built. It's a true stunner, in a flat Cobalt Blue Metallic finish with gold hardware.
The guitar features a body made of Mahogany, with a Soft Leaf Maple top. It has the iconic Wolfgang shape and soft arch top. The Mahogany neck is feels great with an oiled finish. With a slim profile (.805 - .890"), 22 stainless steel frets and a 12 - 16" compound radius, the guitar is super comfortable and suitable for a variety of styles, but especially for playing fast.
A nice touch are the pearl EVH Striped block inlays - be sure to check out the photos for those. It's the first time we've seen that, and we love it.
For this Wolfgang, we went with an HH pickup configuration, featuring classic Seymour Duncan pickups. There are a world of options out there for humbuckers, but in this case we went with the tried and true.
In the bridge position, it's the JB. one of the most popular humbuckers of all time. For any genre, the JB has always sounded just right. The low end is full and powerful, the highs are crisp and detailed and there’s an upper-midrange bump that adds crunch and chunk to heavy chords but translates to a singing, vocal-like quality when you play single notes or solos. Meanwhile the hot output pushes your amp just that little bit harder for more sustain and harmonics.
In the neck position, it's the '59, another one of Duncan's most requested, because it’s so versatile. It's designed in the spirit of the original P.A.F. humbuckers of the 1950s, with sweet sustain, and a warm, full sound that still possesses a clear attack. They made a few refinements to slightly modernize the design and make it more adaptable to different styles. The high end is slightly boosted for improved pick-attack clarity and the mids are a little scooped for an open, smooth sound that’s great for preserving the clarity of the individual notes in a chord.
Of course you'll notice a key element of this guitar - it's a loaded with an EVH Floyd Rose and a locking nut. Not only that, but it also has an EVH D-Tuna. So if you're looking for full expression with the ability to dive deep and also quickly flip to drop D tuning, this guitar gives you all of that.
Other features include a graphite nut, low friction EVH pots and a graphite truss rod adjustment wheel. Everything is built to the highest standard at the EVH Custom Shop, located in California.
We chose Cobalt Blue Metallic as the color for this one for a simple reason: it looks awesome, especially with the matching headstock. We knew it would be cool but were blown away when it landed.
“Everything that I’ve built, destroyed, stumbled onto, learned and experienced is in this,” Eddie Van Halen said of the launch of the EVH Wolfgang. “Every aspect and component of this guitar has been examined and upgraded to the highest standards possible. We left no stone unturned.” Now, nearly 20 years later, a Custom Shop version is available - this is the begining of something special.
