Fender Custom Shop 1964 Stratocaster Relic Faded Aged 3-Tone Sunburst

An All-Time Classic

The 1960s saw some important changes to the Stratocaster, including a neck profile and rosewood fingerboard, pickguard template, pickups and logo, all culminating in a compelling new contemporary look and sound.  As music evolved during this era, so did Leo Fender's finest creation.  The Strat has continued to change over the years, but for many, stepping back to how it was done in the '60's is the way to go, especially in "pre-CBS" years.  

The Custom Shop 1964 Stratocaster Relic is a great testament to that era.  It features a two-piece select Alder body that is very lightweight for excellent comfort, with a lacquer finish.  We chose to do this one as a Relic, in Faded Aged 3-Tone Sunburst, giving it the perfect vintage vibe.   To make it a bit more unique, we went with a roasted Quartersawn Maple neck with 63 Strat “C” profile.  Typically, you will see Custom Shop Strats with the 60's Oval "C" neck shape, which is great - but for those that want a bit more thickness, this is perfect.  It's just slightly larger, without being overbearing.  The 9.5”-radius dark Rosewood fingerboard with 6105 (Narrow Tall) frets allows for steady play up and down the neck without fretting out.  We also had the neck given a Heavy Relic treatment, to maximize the "broken in" feel that players love.  We do this on a lot of guitars and have found that not only do we love it, but so does nearly everyone that picks one up.

Hand-wound 64 Strat pickups with Alnico 5 magnets, a vintage stagger and enamel wiring provide rich ’60s tone.   The middle pickup is reverse-wound, reverse polarity, to eliminate hum.  We also chose the Vintage Modified # 2 wiring setup.  This features a master volume, tone # 1 (neck & middle pickups), and tone # 2 (bridge) with treble bleed (for keeping mids and rolling off highs without adding bass).  This guitar sounds downright amazing.

 

Other features include a Custom Shop vintage-style synchronized tremolo, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and mother of pearl dots.  It includes a very cool blonde Custom Shop case, strap and certificate of authenticity.
