Fender Custom Shop 1962 Custom Telecaster Closet Classic Walnut WIth Case

One of the most classic and timeless guitars in the history of guitars, the Fender Telecaster received a bit of a facelift about 10 years into its existence, with the addition of binding on both sides of the body.  This was known as the "Custom Telecaster".  During this same era, Fender switched from maple to rosewood fretboards.  For this particular Custom Shop piece, we aimed to give birth to a classic with a unique twist.  The result is this Custom Telecaster in Walnut with a matching headstock, with black binding (both top & back) and a matching pickguard, and abalone inlays.  You haven't seen one out there like it, as it's the only one like it.

What makes this 1962 Telecaster Custom really stand out is the finish.  Walnut is typically associated with guitars from the 70's but we knew it would look great on an early 60's style Custom Tele like this.  The black binding really frames the guitar, and the dark rosewood fretboard matches perfectly.  We kept this one as a Closet Classic - so you get some aging, but no wear ore relic'ing.  It's a clean looking guitar, with the finish tamed down just a bit, to give it a great vintage vibe.

 

Of course, aesthetics only take you so far - it's really about the sound and feel.  The lightweight ash body is very resonant - we noticed that before plugging in.  The 60's Oval "C" neck shape is super comfortable and very smooth to play  It's rock solid quartersawn maple, and topped with a dark rosewood fretboard that has a 9.5" radius and medium vintage frets for easy playability.   An nice feature on this guitar is the use of abalone dots, which brighten things up a bit and add a custom touch.

 

This Telecaster is loaded with Custom Shop '63 Tele pickups, which recreate the early 60's Tele sound that is known and loved by players all over.  Whether you need spine tingling twang, hard hitting rock bottoms or glistening clean highs, this one gives it to you.  Not only these period correct, but they are some of our favorite Tele pickups here.  It's a well balanced set, so you'll be comfortable switching between the bridge and neck pickups, or combining.  The snappniness of the bridge pickup with the warmth of the neck pickup really works for a variety of styles.

 

If weight is a concern, you're in luck - this Tele comes in at just 7.2 lbs.  Other features include a vintage style bridge, vintage tuners and a bone nut.  Also, check out the custom case - it's the period correct brown tolex version, but the interior really matches this particular guitar perfectly.
