Gretsch Custom Shop Masterbuilt G6120CS 1962 Doublecut Closet Classic Dark Transparent Amber

No instruments epitomize the extraordinary expertise and attention to detail of Gretsch’s most trusted hands like Custom Shop instruments. From modern versions of legendary Gretsch instruments to artist tribute models and specially requested one-off guitars, the Gretsch Custom Shop takes “That Great Gretsch Sound” to an entirely new plane, but also preserves and perfects it. 

Truetone Music is proud to have a long and close relationship with Gretsch, especially with the Custom Shop.  Over the years, we've made a pilgrimages to Corona there to sit down with Masterbuilders to cook up a batch of Custom Shop guitars.  Sometimes we go for vintage-styled recreations, sometimes we go for modernized tweaks.  Sometimes it's a classic color, sometimes it's a totally new color or even reclaimed wood.  Either way, they always knock it out of the park!  Years ago, we met with the legendary Stephen Stern there to create a batch of unique builds - this was one of them.  Even after he retired, the legacy continues with amazing guitars such as this.

This G6120CS 1962 Doublecut is a a result of this partnership.  It's a reimagining of a classic model, with hand-selected wood picked out for this guitar.  The end result is stunning.  We had never come a cross a Gretsch exactly like this, which is exactly why we did it - and when it sold, we had to do it again, which is what we have here.  This one was built by veteran Masterbuilder Gonzalo Madrigal, and of course he nailed it.

The main calling card of this guitar is the Curly Maple top, back and sides (with matching headcap),  and a AAA Flame Maple neck.  These woods give the guitar a truly unique look.  It's been stained Dark Transparent Amber and given the Closet Classic treatment - so it's aged, with finish checking, but no wear/ding/dents.  This is a clean guitar, looking like it was store in it's case for decades and then pulled out - for you.  Be sure to zoom in on the photos to see the amazingly well-done checking in the finish.  

Throw in the B6 Bigsby with a compentsated Rocking Bar bridge, and you have a classic Gretsch guitar. The "C" neck is familiar and comfortable - not fat, not too skinny, just right.  The ebony fretboard has vintage frets for the right feel and is topped with beautiful mother of pearl inlays.

Besides the hand-selected wood, we threw in a few other custom touches. Aged binding, with a tortoise shell pickguard that has cream engraving to match, along with custom tortoise shell pickup bezels, ties it all together. We also went for the "split cloud" fretboard inlays, which are rarely seen. an old school script logo on the headstock.
