Fans of Gretsch guitars will enjoy this one, especially if they're into ones that have been upgraded. Here we have a 2003 Gretsch 6120-1960 Reissue (often designated as the 6120-60) in Orange Stain. The previous owner modded the guitar - more on that in a moment. First, it should be known that this one was manufactured at the legendary Terada plant in Japan in 2003. That was a monumental transitional year for Gretsch, as it marked the Fender takeover, resulting in dramatically improved build techniques, vintage-correct dimensions, top-notch wood choices, and upgraded hardware.
What you get here is a fully hollow 16" laminated maple body featuring a vintage-correct 2.5" body depth and traditional trestle bracing for enhanced sustain and feedback resistance. The bound maple neck features a comfortable, slim "C" profile, topped with a premium ebony fretboard that has a 12" radius and Neo-Classic "thumbnail" inlays. It's easy to play, with the looks and styling of a classic Gretsch, with a striking translucent Orange Stain finish. Of course it has gold hardware and a Bigsby B6 tailpiece for expressive tremolo. This guitar was upgraded with a bone nut, Compton stainless steel bar bridge and Sperzel locking tuners.
It doesn't end there - where this one really shines is the sound, thanks to the upgraded TV Jones Magna'Tron pickups and Hotrod wiring. According to TV Jones, the Magna'Tron blends single-coil twang with unique Filter'Tron & DeArmond influence. Although it can sound just like a single-coil, it is built with two coils (humbucking). The dual-coils provide a hint of compression on the high-end and no 60-cycle hum. One part of the recipe that makes the Magna'Tron so special is its staggered cylinder Fender-style magnets. The result is an output that is bright and chirpy with quick attack and exceptional pop and clarity. The Magna'Tron delivers a unique mix of single-coil spank meets Filter'Tron style twang with no hum! Slightly brighter and tighter on the bass than the TV Classic. It's a great sounding set of pickups. Gretsch Hotrod wiring strips a standard Gretsch hollow body circuit down to the bare essentials: one 3-way pickup selector toggle switch and one master volume control pot, removing all individual pickup volumes, tone pots, and standby switches. It simplifies the guitar and gives you raw, unfiltered tone to rock out with.
This is a great find - Gretsch fans know that guitars built during this specific window are highly sought after. The 2003 "Fender-era" revitalization returned the 6120-1960 to its true lightweight, resonant, and punchy roots. This one has been modded and upgraded nicely so it's a unique find.
The guitar is in great condition - it's over 20 years old and did get played, so there are some scratches and honest player wear but overall it's in great shape. Also, the original case is included but it's rather beat up on the outside and missing the handle, so it must be cradled like a dog or small child. The techs in our shop have setup this Gretsch to play perfectly, and it's ready to go!
