The Choice of Legends

Gibson Custom Shop is the pinnacle of craftsmanship, quality, and sound excellence. Each instrument celebrates Gibson's legacy through accuracy, authenticity and attention to detail.

Regardless of the fact that George Harrison and Eric Clapton rocked a '64 SG™ Standard, that model year was clearly a standout for SGs in general. The clunky side-pull vibrato had been replaced by the dependable Maestro™ Vibrola. The neck profiles had increased in size, resembling the profile found on 1959 Les Pauls. And the balance, playability and look of the SG seemed to come into its own.

For all those reasons, the Gibson Custom Shop is proud to present the 1964 SG Standard Reissue. Along with the Maestro Vibrola and chunky neck profile, it has all the hyper-accurate vintage specs one could possibly want -- original construction methods, chemically-recreated plastics, replica electronics, and more. The result is perhaps the best looking, feeling and sounding SG Reissue yet.

We can attest to the comfort in the ergonomic design of this guitar. Its lightweight mahogany construction and slim profile make it a comfortable choice, especially compared to a Les Paul from the same time period. The Custom Shop specifically used a single piece of mahogany to achieve this lighter weight, resulting in a 1" reduction in thickness and added edge bevels for even more comfort.  In 1961, the SG Standard was introduced by Gibson as having the "fastest neck in the world." Though very thin, it was susceptible to breaking. By 1964, the SG evolved to have a sturdier neck. This model features the same medium C-shape and is attached to the body using a lengthy tenon and historically-accurate hide glue. The Indian rosewood fretboard boasts extra rolled fingerboard binding and cellulose nitrate trapezoid inlays for an authentic touch.

This Custom Shop 1964 SG Standard boasts Custombucker Alnico III pickups, capable of producing a diverse range of tones. From a rich, powerful sound for rhythmic playing to a distinctive PAF growl, these pickups are sure to exceed your expectations. Plus, this SG is equipped with CTS 500K audio taper pots and Black Beauty capacitors, satisfying even the most discerning tone enthusiasts with its premium sound.

This one also features Ultra Light Aging by the skilled artisans of the Murphy Lab.  Started by Gibson with the legendary Tom Murphy, the Murphy Lab is now well known as the premier workshop for finish work when it comes to aging instruments.  Simply put, no one does it better.  Every time we get one in, we get more impressed.  The Murphy Lab Ultra Light Aged finish treatment, paired with lightly aged hardware, simulates decades of light play wear, giving it the unique character, vibe, and feel of an original example from the Gibson Golden Era.  Not only that, it's in an ultra cool color - Pelham Blue.

The guitar comes with a certificate of authenticity and a brown and pink reissue 5-latch hardshell case.

For authentic SG that brings it all back to the mid-60's, it would be hard beat this one.
