Used And Vintage

For fans of shorter scale guitars, or just vintage Fenders in general, or those that crave vintage without hefty price tags, we have a little something unique for you: Duo-Sonic II from 1965.  It's surely not something you see every day.

The Duo-Sonic first debuted in 1956 as Fender's first student model as a 22.5" scale guitar, mean to be easier for kids and beginers to pick up.  It was made to be a deuluxe upgrade from the Musicmaster.  Here's a Duo-Sonic II from 1965, just after it was redesigned.  Over the years, Duo-Sonic gained status as a cult favorite, and used by a diverse roster of players.....starting with Hendrix, to Cobain, to modern players in indie rock bans, this model has been put to good use.

In 1964 the Duo-Sonic was redesigned so that all of Fender's student guitars featured larger and slightly offset bodies, necks with larger headstocks and rosewood fingerboards, and plastic pickguards with the volume and tone controls mounted on a separate metal plate.  The selector switches were moved above the pickups; the guitar utilizes two 3-position on-off-on switches that allowed for in and out-of-phase sounds. The pickups are reverse-wound/reverse-polarity, turning them into a functional humbucker when both pickups are used simultaneously. You get the classic alder body, two single-coil pickups and what seen as an innovative bridge at the time.  This one has an L series serial number, normally associated with 1964 but we dated it to 1965.

While many vintage Duo-Sonics out there have been modified, this one has not - all of the parts are original, including the pickups.  Of course, what is not original is the finish - this was redone as some point with a very vibrant white color. We found that the original finish was Desert Sand.  But we're digging the way it looks now!  The electronics appear to be untouched, and as far as we can tell, the only thing changed over the years has been the strings.  Also, the case is original, which you don't see often.

The guitar has been setup to play perfectly by our vintage specialist.  The frets still have life in them.  It plays like a vintage guitar - 7.25" radius, vintage frets, etc. and is perfect for anyone that is looking for that.

We rarely see all original Duo-Sonics from the mid-60's, and definitely not ones this nice.  This is a great find for any fan of vintage guitars like this, or anyone wanting a piece of Fender history in their possession, all at a great price.
