New Old School
Ever since the Telecaster debuted in the early 1950's, it has seen many evolutions, modifications, alterations and colors. By 1960, some important changes were seen, mainly in the addition of a rosewood fretboard. Not only that, but a new neck shape, bridge design, pickups, and color options, gave the Telecaster a decidedly different feel, sound and look.
The Custom Shop 1960 Telecaster Relic showcases all of this, along with some modern tweaks. It features a lightweight select ash body, a rift-sawn maple neck with a 60's style Oval "C" neck shape, and all of the correct vintage hardware. The neck is topped with a AAA Rosewood (flat lam) fretboard. We went with a 9.5" radius and Medium Jumbo (6150) frets for easy playing and bending - this is one of the most common and popular modifications to vintage-styled guitars out of the Custom Shop. While the guitar has the regular Relic finish package, we had the neck given a Heavy Relic treatment, to maximize the "broken in" feel that players love.

As for the color, this is a new one from the Custom Shop. It's called "Natural Blonde", which is achieved by fading and aging Nocaster Blonde. On the spec sheet, it actually says "Super Super Faded/Aged" As the title suggests, the result is a "muted" and faded look that gives the appearance of a Natural (no paint) guitar, but it does have the Blonde color. This has the look of a guitar that has been aging gracefully for the last 60 years, morphing into an entirely different color of its own.
It's not all about the looks though - this guitar sounds downright amazing. We went with handwound '58 Tele pickups, which are some of our favorite Custom Shop pickups. The vintage stagger, enamel wiring and Alnico 5 magnets provide a pure vintage tone. This can give you all of the Tele twang you could ask for, but with the ability to sound smooth & serene, making it a versatile set.

Other features include a period correct bridge with steel saddles, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and a single-ply parchment pickguard. Also includes a Custom Shop hardshell case, strap and certificate of authenticity.
