Fender Custom Shop

The "Sound Heard Around the World".  The Fender Precision Bass is the true original.  This Custom Shop creation speaks to bass players that want the traditional feel & sound, recreated in a variety of styles, specs and colors.  We cooked this one up to be an example of what a classic color Precision would be, but with a few nice tweaks.

For Truetone's own Dave, this was the target for his custom creation.  We recently started a new "Staff Picks" program to expand our Fender Custom Shop selection.  Everyone - from sales to repairs to shipping - had the opportunity to design their dream instrument.  This is the first bass to arrive, and it's a winner.

Dave went with the Closet Classic treatment in Black, and added a Gold Anodized pickguard to bring a touch of the 50's to a 60's Precision.  He wanted to see a clean bass without relic'ing, but with heavy checking, some of the glossiness muted, and hardware without the shine.  It's like it was made in 1962 and then stayed in its case for decades.  Most importantly, the back of the neck has a satin lacquer finish, giving it a slightly broken in feel - it's easy to play and without the stickiness often associated with full lacquer finishes. The alder body is very resonant, even unplugged.  The rock solid quartersawn neck is topped with a nice, dark AAA rosewood fretboard.  Interesting features that Dave chose for this bass include a 1.675" nut width, slimmed down C profile (.790 - .930"), Narrow Tall 6105 frets and a 9.5" radius.

The result is an old school looking bass with a bit of a modern feel.  It's a special bass, as you won't find other '62 P basses out there with these neck specs.

The rest of the specs stayed "period correct", giving you the look, feel and sound of a killer vintage bass.   It has vintage tuners, bridge and neck plate, along with clay dots on the fretboard.  One other thing Dave did differently was request a tweed case - while not period correct for 1962, it's just something he chose to do.

This '62 Precision Bass features a warm sound with a pronounced midrange, providing a pronounced sonic presence alongside simple playability. Thump, growl and power - it's everything you want.  This comes from a Custom Shop 59-62 P Bass pickup.  It truly is the most iconic bass pickup in the world.

While we do a lot of really unique Custom Shop builds, some in crazy colors - but sometimes we want to go with more of a classic, with just a bit of tweaking for better playability.  That's what this bass is.  Dave nailed it with the specs and the Custom Shop nailed it with the build.  Super comfortable to play, the most classic of tones, and a great vibe - this '62 Precision bass has it all.
