Truetone Fretless Run

At Truetone Music, we love Fender Custom Shop Basses.  We know that bass players recognize that this is where some of the world's greatest basses are made.  We also know that they can do more (much more) than recreate the iconic models from the '50's and '60's.  There's an opportunity to create something new, something different.   There's where we went with this bass: it's modeled after a 1964 Jazz, but fretless.  We did this specifically because no one else is - the only Custom Shop fretless basses you see out there is the Jaco Pastorius model.  While we love that bass, we wanted to do something different, not a signature model, to create something truly unique.  It's the first of a run of fretless basses we cooked up with the Custom Shop.

For this '64 Jazz Bass, we went with Closet Classic as the finish package.  As the name suggests, this creates the appearance of an instrument that was made 50 - 60 years, but was then put away in its case.  You'll see finish checking, some of the glossiness muted, and hardware without the shine.   This looks absolutely sublime in Ebony Transparent with a tortoiseshell pickguard.  The transparent finish is perfect to see the nice grain of the ash body.

The quartersawn maple neck has the classic 60's Jazz bass "U" profile, topped with a nice, dark ebony fretboard.  It's a 12" radius, perfect for a fretless, and we included the fret lines.  To further the playability, we had the finish sanded slightly on the back of the neck.  This gives you a great, slightly worn in feel, without the look of a relic, making this bass an absolute pleasure to play.  It's very slightly done, not heavily noticeable, but makes a difference.  In our opinion, this is key for a fretless bass.  You want to be able to slide up & down without concerning yourself with getting "stuck".  This is one of our favorite things about Custom Shop instruments and how we spec them out - not a crazy amount of wear (in this case, really none), but with the back of the neck broken in so it feels like a vintage instrument.

Two Custom Shop Vintage Jazz single-coil pickups provide a variety of tones, and most importantly, suit a fretless bass perfectly.  These classic pickups produce warm, clear and articulate output, with great low-end definition, up-front midrange punch, and singing high-end.  We figured these would be perfect for this bass, and once it landed and we plugged in, we knew it.

The bass includes a vintage style Deluxe hardshell case, Custom Shop strap, and Certificate of Authenticity.

This is an amazing looking, sounding and feeling Custom Shop '64 Jazz Fretless.  This is the only one ever made like it.  Come to Club Fender at Truetone Music to check it out, or order it right here right now to get it sent straight to your home.
