Fender Custom Shop

A TRUE ONE OF A KIND

Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt instruments are the pinnacle of design, quality and craftsmanship.  Anytime we receive one, it's an event - but occasionally, one arrives that stops the show.  This is it.

We are proud to present this Custom Classic Jazz Bass, built by the highly esteemed Vincent Van Trigt.  The concept for it began with a meeting at the Custom Shop in 2019, between Truetone Music and Vincent.  3 years later, it has arrived, and is everything we hoped for, plus more.  For those that are familiar with Vincent's incredible work, he is most well-known for his incredible aging work on Heavy Relic, vintage-styled instruments.  We went in the opposite direction, choosing to do an NOS, modern Jazz bass with hand-selected woods.  The result is incredible - it's like nothing we've seen before, and it's the only one ever made.

We started with the Custom Classic Jazz Bass.  Originally designed based off of Reggie Hamilton's signature model, the Custom Classic Jazz features a slightly slimmer waist contour, deeper cutaways, and a 5-bolt neck.  It also has a PJ pickup configuration, which is why we chose it with Vincent.  This base model lends itself to what we were going for - the vintage feel of a Fender bass but with modern appointments.

Of course, the star of the show is the wood: we worked with Vincent to select an incredible Rosewood Burl top, on a Roasted Ash body.  Words cannot describe this look - that's what the photos are for.  We've never seen a Fender bass with a Rosewood Burl top.  It's incredible.  Adding to the look is a unique single-ply Mother of Pearl pickguard (typically it's multi-ply).  It's a wonderful touch, especially when it's matched to neck binding and block inlay.  The neck is a rock solid Quartersawn Roasted Maple with a Roasted Maple fretboard.  It has a 60's P Bass "C" neck shape, but with a 1.500" nut width, which is super comfortable to play.  Altogether, it's a little bit Precision, a little bit Jazz, and totally unique.

For those pickups, master pickup winder Josefina Campos handwound a set with a '57 P Bass neck/middle pickup and a vintage Jazz bass bridge pickup.  We love the PJ configuration here, and this combination in particular works extremely well.  Full, powerful, and articulate - exactly what you want out of a Fender bass. It's the sound of the 50's with the P Bass pickup, the sounds of the 60's with the Jazz Bass pickup, and for a modern touch, we went with active electronics.  The bass is loaded with an Aguilar OBP-2 preamp, which is Vincent's favorite. It was designed to provide fat tone while fitting into small cavities.  With +/-18dB of boost and cut at 40Hz and +/- 16dB of treble boost and cut at 6.5 kHz, you have can emphasize just the right frequencies.  The stacked knobs give you full control to dial in any tone you want.  And, there's an active/passive switch on the control plate, so you can go between sounds.  This is an incredible sounding bass, and a perfect example of having the best of both worlds - fully modern and vintage.

It doesn't stop there.  At Vincent's suggestion, the bass has a Babicz Original Series bridge, for improved tone and sustain.  These high-mass bridges really do make a difference and give added tonal stability.  He also suggested using Gotoh Go Lite tuners, which retain the look that's correct for a Fender headstock, but are a nice upgrade from vintage tuners.  Being lightweight, they help to avoid "neck dive".

All around, this Masterbuilt Vincent Van Trigt Custom Classic Jazz Bass has it all - and of course, the aesthetic is amazing. This is a rare opportunity to get a very special bass, built by one of the best out there. Come to Club Fender at Truetone Music to check it out, or make it yours today right here.

ABOUT THE BUILDER
Originally from the Netherlands, Vincent moved to California in 2005 and began working for Fender immediately. After wearing a variety of hats in different departments, he started in the Custom Shop in 2012. A 2-year assistant role with Stephen Stern at the Gretsch Custom Shop was followed by a 5-year apprenticeship with John Cruz. Now the newest Fender Masterbuilder, he has grown an immediate following, especially amongst bass players. Vincent is a bass player himself, and the love he has for the instrument shows in each one he makes. He has quickly become one of the most in demand builders, with a waitlist so long that new orders can no longer be placed.
