Used And Vintage

Here at Truetone, we get a lot of amazing guitars - anyone that has been in our showroom or browsed our website has seen that.  Every now and then, a guitar comes through the front door that stops us in our tracks.  Most recently, one of the nicest guitars to arrive is this:  a Gibson Custom Shop Made 2 Measure 1959 ES-335, done by the legendary Tom Murphy himself.  Built in 2021 in Gibson's Custom Shop in Nashville, this is a prime example of the quality that one can expect.  From the general craftsmanship to the finest detail, everything is perfectly dialed in.  Each guitar is a handcrafted masterpiece with the character, feel and vibe of an original.

Tom Murphy was a professional touring musician for years, before becoming a legendary luthier.  Over the years, he became intimately acquainted with vintage guitars - the sound, feel and look.  He gained invaluable experience while building a client list that included Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Peter Frampton and many more.  All of this led to an incredible skill set and mastery of how to recreate iconic guitars from Gibson's history, with unparalleled accuracy.  This ES-335 is a prime example.

It's important to note that this is a Murphy-painted and Murphy-aged guitar - it was done by the man himself.  Not that there's anything wrong with a current Murphy Lab guitar, but ones done by Murphy directly take on an extra meaning and value.  It was spec'ed out by Wildwood Guitars, and it's amazing.

The body is absolutely gorgeous, painted by Murphy in a special color called "Darkburst".  It's a great vintage look, and a little different that everything else you see out there.  That's a big part of why we love this one so much.  Anything done by Tom Murphy is special, and this shows it.  The same goes for the wear - this guitar was given the Heavy Aging treatment, so it's quite worn in, authentically done in a way that only Murphy can do.

Everything on the guitar is original and built to Wildwood's specs for a 1959 ES-335.  Wildwood choose to put in their own collaboration pickups, called Wildwood Custombuckers.  After plugging this guitar in, we can see why.  They contain the best characteristics of vintage underwound PAFs, with ideal string-to-string balance, excellent clarity, and a sweetness that's never harsh.  Whether it's hard rock or jazz, these versatile pickups can fit right into the mix.

The neck shape is a very comfortable C, fitting for a '59 ES-335.  So while it's big, it's not too big, and is definitely super comfortable.  The Gibson Custom Shop absolutely nailed it.  Of course all of the hardware and other appointments are period correct and expertly done as well.

The original hardshell case, Certificate of Authenticity and all other paperwork is included.  This is the complete package, and considering how much these are new, it's a great value.  The guitar is in excellent condition and has been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop.

We've had some amazing ES-335's here over the years, from vintage to brand new, and have seen some amazing candidates for the best - this one has to be right up there.
