In the world of vintage acoustic guitars, there are not many that are as classic as a Martin D-28. Dial the clock back to 1966, and you'll find that C.F. Martin & Company was crafting some of the finest instruments of the era. The D-28, as a flagship model in their lineup, was and still is one of the most legendary acoustics ever made.
Taking in a vintage Martin guitar is exciting, and to have a guitar like this 1966 D-28 is a privilege. We loved inspecting, vetting and testing it - and are now going to enjoy putting it into the next player's collection.
The guitar is all original, except the nut, bridge pins and end pin. It has had an expertly done refret and neck reset, which was performed by Martin (by Chris Thompson at the Martin Custom Shop). Also, a side brace was reglued. The original case is long gone but this guitar comes with quite the upgrade - it has a tour-quality Calton case. Obviously there's a bit of wear and aging, as to be expected from an instrument from the 60's, but it's surprisingly clean and in great shape. It still has a ton of working life left in it. The original finish is still on the guitar, and it has aged beautifully. Check out the photos to see everything.
The Brazilian rosewood body is paired with a premium spruce top, producing a warm, full sound with exceptional presence and crystal clear top end. We were almost surprised at the clarity and focus that this guitar provides - while you will always get great projection from a D-28, you don't always get the top end articulation that this one has. Mid 60's D-28's like this tend to be slightly more balanced, with a good punch to go with the open sound and shimmering high-end. This guitar is a great example of that. Over the years, the wood has aged and dried out nicely, creating a woody tone that is hard to get from anything other than a vintage acoustic like this. The action is low but not too low - it's great for chordal strumming, finger picking and a variety of styles. It may not be the guitar for someone that really digs in and hits hard, but for most players, it's an ideal acoustic.
As stated, the guitar has had a refret and neck reset - so while there has been plenty of playing time on this guitar, there is plenty more left on it. The guitar has stood the test of time and will continue to do so.
A vintage 1966 Martin D-28 is a special guitar, and we're excited to present this one. Come to Truetone Music to experience it, or order right here for it to be expertly packed and carefully shipped to your home.
