Used And Vintage

The Soldano X88R is a legendary, three-channel all-tube rackmount preamp originally introduced in the late 1980s by Mike Soldano. Widely considered the "holy grail" of rack preamps, the iconic purple-anodized unit delivered the cascading-gain styling of the famous SLO-100 to studio and touring rigs.  These are super hard to find, especially one like this.

Modern players can now access this exact circuit via the officially updated Soldano X88-IR, which integrates the vintage preamp core with powerful digital cabinet and power amp simulations.  However, for many, old school is the way to go, and that's what we have here with this rare original unit.  Plus, this one was previously owned and modded by Rusty Anderson - more on that in a moment, below.

Core Architecture & Channels
All-Tube Signal Path: Driven by five 12AX7 preamp tubes to achieve rich, authentic analog harmonic structures.

Channel 1 (Clean): Features a Fender-style voicing alongside a selectable "Altered Mode" for pushed, edge-of-breakup grit.

Channels 2 & 3 (Crunch / Overdrive): Two completely independent, identical channels that can be configured for either Plexi-style crunch or full SLO high-gain saturation.

Dedicated EQs: Every channel features completely isolated 3-band EQ, preamp gain, and output level controls.

When professional guitarists like Rusty Anderson (longtime lead guitarist for Paul McCartney) modify high-end Soldano rack gear, the modifications typically target the preamp's gain structure and frequency response to sit perfectly in a live, multi-amp mix.

The current modifications for this model are:

Font Panel:

  • All Control knobs for Channel two are BLOCKED (as well as the LED for Channel 2)
  • There is also an extra Bright switch for Channel 3.
  • Power Light is Green (instead of Blue)

Back Panel:

  • Channel 1 & 3 Inputs are Blocked
  • An adapter (1/4") is plugged into Channel 2 and has "short" written on it.
  • The 5-Pin FS Input is Blocked
  • 1 Normal Output
  • 1 Ungrounded Output
  • 1 Input

It's in good shape and was just service by our amp tech, so it's in perfect working order and ready to go.  It's a special opportunity likely to go fast.
