Truetone Music is proud to be part of an exclusive group of dealers in the Taylor Custom Select program. Within it, we have the opportunity to bring a truly unique instrument to life. Having a full range of model options, tonewoods, body shapes, aesthetic details and design features at our disposal, we work to bring the best guitar we can to the table, at the best value. The goal is to select specifications that match playing styles and musical sensibilities, offering a one-of-a-kind heirloom-quality instrument.
Taylor Truetone Custom Select guitars are all one-off pieces. Here we have a take on the stellar Builder's Edition 814ce Grand Auditorium, unlike any other out there. Any Builder's Edition guitar is going to be amazing, but this one takes it to another level. After admiring the photos, you can read all about it below.
This Taylor Truetone Custom Select Builder's Edition 814ce boasts a body made of Mahogany, paired with a Torrefied Sitka Spruce top. We specifically chose this combination while working with Taylor on the design of this guitar. It yields a played-in sound from the first strum that acoustic aficionados will find familiar and pleasing. There's an exceptional low-end presence, clear trebles and a warmth that you often don't find on a Taylor, but will with the clarity you expect. Inside, Scalloped V-Class bracing allows the top to vibrate more freely, for a warmer, richer tone without losing the superior intonation that the regular V-Class bracing brought to the table. You get longer sustain, greater volume and near-perfect pitch accuracy all the way up the neck. Whether it be for fingerstyle or heavy strumming and everything in between, this guitar delivers.
With this being a Builder's Edition model, ergonomics are prioritized, with a beveled armrest being a key element of the guitar. Once your right arm gets used to this, it's hard to go back to anything else. You also get a beveled cutaway for easier access to the higher register, and chamfered (smoothed) body edges for all around comfort.
This guitar has Taylor's standard carve neck profile, which is slim without being skinny and stays comfortable to grip for hours. The neck has a satin finish for smoothness. It's easy to play - this is the type of guitar that is hard to put down.
The guitar is beautiful as is, so we didn't add much bling to it - instead, we opted to keep it relatively simple. We went with simple dots on the fretboard and a simple Mother of Pearl Taylor logo on the headstock. The rosette was kept simple as well. Of course the guitar looks amazing - the gloss finish is excquisite. We chose to do a Natural top, with a Shaded Edgeburst back, and Kona Edgeburst sides. This combination is beautiful, and while the guitar stays refined, it will still stand out in any setting.
Other unique features include Gotoh 510 Antique Gold tuners, a firestripe pickguard, and Ebony bridge pins with abalone dots (something we've done on all of our Custom Select guitars).
The guitar comes equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element VTC pickup/preamp. Part of the reasoning was to avoid any routing on the body - all of the controls are internal. Most importantly, we feel that the Element brings a "true" amplification to the guitar - in that it doesn't color the sound at all. If you're getting a guitar with these tonewoods, you want that tone to be pure when it comes out of the amp. You can still control it, from the soundhole. There's a good reason that our shop has installed the Element VTC in many guitars over the years - and it's because it's one of the best systems out there.
