1958 Prototype Design

The Fender Custom Shop honors the debut year of the sleekly subversive Jazzmaster with a 1958 Jazzmaster Proto. It represents one of the earliest known prototypes, with some rare, unique features.  This stunning guitar example of what Fender's top luthiers can do.  It was made to give off the vibe of an original model left in storage for many, many years. Designed as a period correct build, but with some modern tweaks that give it the versatility that the original model never had, this is one incredible Jazzmaster.

Looking back at the original 1958 Jazzmaster you had a lot of innovative pieces of tech for the time. Not only did it incorporate multiple switches for different tones instead of the standard 3 way switches on other guitars, but it also introduced the world to the now iconic Fender floating tremolo that found its way on to a few different guitars throughout the years.

The body has been made out of lightweight Ash making it easier to play for longer periods of time - this one weighs in at just 8.5 lbs, light for the model.  The neck is built from Quartersawn Maple, topped with a nice dark Rosewood fretboard. One of the more interesting parts of the neck is that it is actually built off of the 1962 spec 'C' profile, with a 9.5"" radius and 6105 (Narrow Tall) frets for easy playability.

One of the issues with some older guitars like this came from excess noise. Overwound single coil pickups and 50's technology made them a bit of a pain to work with at times. So even though it is using hand wired pickups based on Jazzmaster guitars from this era, they have managed to minimise noise, hum and other issues.

For the finish package, we went with Closet Classic, one of our favorites.  As the name suggests, this creates the appearance of an instrument that was made decades ago, but was then put away in its case. You'll see finish checking, some of the glossiness muted, and hardware without the shine.  Be sure to check out all of the photos, especially the angled shots, to see how the finish looks - those show it the best.

Other features include the RSD J-Bridge for better stability, with brass saddles for extra warmth.  It has vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and a winged string tree. Includes deluxe hardshell case, strap and Certificate of Authenticity.
