Vintage 1964 Gibson Super 400CES Sunburst with OHSC

  Truetone Music has been selected to take in a special collection of instruments from a very special long-time customer and friend of ours.  A collector of only unique, rare, vintage and high-end guitars & amps, he amassed a serious collection of these years.  For the first time, these pieces are available on the market.

The Super 400 CES was one of Gibson's full-bodied arch-top electric guitars. It was derived from the non-electric predecessor the Super 400, which debuted in 1934, and, with a pause for WWII, it was produced for many decades. The CES (Cutaway Electric Spanish) was first produced in late 1951 at Gibson's Kalamazoo factory, and became a mainstay of their product line.  This beautiful example from 1964 is a primo example of one.

The features a carved solid spruce top; highly figured tiger flame maple back, neck and sides; and a solid ebony fingerboard with mother of pearl block fingerboard and peghead inlay.  It's accented by 5-ply body, neck, head and pickguard binding and triple bound f-holes.  To say it's a stunner would be an understatement.  The neck is fast and easy to play, ideal for the player not digging the fat necks on the older examples of the model. With an elegant D profile, effortless in the hand, the neck has smooth low action.  The tone of this instrument is clear and open, with deep resonance in the bass, and sparkling natural reverb in the treble register.  It's balanced across the tonal spectrum and simply sounds amazing.

This Super 400CES was refinished at some point in its life - and done very well.  Thankfully it was done in the same sunburst color, so it looks right.  The pickups are original.  Some of the hardware has been replaced, such as the bridge, but the tailpiece is original.  The original hardshell case is included as well.

The guitar has been vetted by our top vintage expert and luthier, and has been setup to play perfectly.  For anyone that's in the market for a Super 400CES and wants a piece of Gibson history, this is a serious find.
